Perhaps the funniest sports quote I’ve heard
posted in Humor, Sports |Setting: UEFA (soccer) EURO2008, Friday June 13, 2008 - Netherlands vs. France. With time running out, the surprising Dutch are up 3-1 on a pre-tournament favorite France, but France is applying pressure, and there’s two minutes of stoppage time for them to “work their magic”.
Then, 1:29 into stoppage time, on a brilliant spin and kick, the Dutch score again to make it 4-1. As the goal goes in, ESPN announcer Adrian Healey quipped, “Well it’s a Dutch oven, and the French are toast“.
Now that’s funny. I don’t care who you are.
I have to wonder if that brilliance flowed naturally in the moment, or if he had that saying saved and waiting for the perfect time. But regardless. That’s just plain funny.
